On July 1, Tesla announced on its official Weibo: the first mass-produced Cybercab has begun engineering testing in Austin, Texas, USA. From the debut of the concept car in October 2024 to the real vehicle hitting the road, it took only about 20 months. Tesla initially put 34 Cybercabs into testing in downtown Austin.

The biggest feature of this car is: it completely has no steering wheel and pedals.

Unlike the previous version modified from the Model Y, the Cybercab was built around fully autonomous driverless driving from the very beginning of development, and the production car directly eliminates all driving control components. The Texas Department of Transportation has confirmed that the design is compliant.

During testing, a safety supervisor is present in the car, but only monitors and does not intervene. The Cybercab adopts a two-seat layout and butterfly doors that open from the center.

In terms of hardware, it is equipped with the HW4.0 perception platform and FSD end-to-end pure vision algorithm V14.3.3. A 48kWh battery pack, EPA range of 672 kilometers. Curb weight is only 1,412 kilograms, and it supports wireless inductive charging.

Quick comment:

34 cars without steering wheels are road testing on the streets of Austin, and it took only 20 months from concept to real vehicle. Engineering testing is only the first step, and there is still a way to go before true commercial operation. The adaptability of the pure vision solution under complex road conditions in China is also an unknown. The subsequent performance of the Cybercab is worth watching.
